Fathom was made in response to the mounting collective trauma of the displaced population, from the refugee crisis in Europe, to Central American migrants at the Southern U.S. border, to migrant children forcibly separated from their loved ones. Numbers counting loss grew in rapid succession and become numbing and meaningless. The news cycle is relentless and moves on, leaving behind trauma and loss as if they never existed.

Fathom makes use of thousands of plain, white feathers, hand-dipped in black pine tar and wiped dry. Each feather is attached directly to the wall using a sewing needle. At 8’ (2.4 meters) in diameter, the circular composition confronts the viewers and draws them in through dense textures of black and white. A subtle scent of pine tar, reminiscent of burnt forest, adds a sense of urgency in the air.
