Inspired by Stratus cloud, a low-level typically situated low in the sky just above the horizon. The installation visualizes a simple, daily occurrence in the sky that embodies the hope of rain.
Stratus is conceptualized in response to the drought-stricken landscape seen in many of the southern U.S. States. The work consists of a vast field of polyester film panels suspended 7’ from the ground, just above the viewers. Each clear panel is carefully dipped multiple times in graphite infused molten wax. The flow of liquid wax and graphite particulates form organic drifts and flows reminiscent of water paths, rivers and deltas, and land and sky.
